What Is a Casino?

2 min read

A casino is a gambling establishment where patrons can wager on various games of chance and skill. The most common game in casinos is roulette, which features a ball spinning around and around a fixed pole, but other games are also played. Some casinos specialize in specific games such as poker, blackjack, and craps. Most casinos have an array of security measures to prevent cheating and theft by both patrons and staff. These include the use of security cameras, catwalks that allow surveillance staff to view players through one-way glass from above, and electronic systems that track betting chips with built in microcircuitry or monitor roulette wheels for statistical deviations.

Regardless of whether a patron wins or loses, a casino must make a certain amount of money, known as the house edge, in order to remain profitable. As a result, it is extremely rare for a casino to suffer a net loss. In fact, large bettors are frequently given extravagant inducements such as free spectacular entertainment, transportation, and even a luxury hotel suite to encourage them to gamble more.

While the first casinos were located in seaside resorts, in the 1980s many American states amended their laws to permit land-based casinos, and a few now have casinos on reservations of American Indian tribes. Many of these casinos are designed to resemble Monte Carlo, the belle epoque structure in Monaco that was the prototype for modern casino design. Others are more futuristic, such as the glittering rainbow high-rise tower of Scottsdale’s Talking Stick.
