What is a Casino?

2 min read

A casino is a building or room in which people play gambling games. Casinos are most often combined with hotels, restaurants, retail shops, cruise ships or other tourist attractions. They may also be located in cities with large numbers of people interested in gambling, such as Las Vegas or Atlantic City. The term casino can also refer to an establishment that offers certain types of sports betting, such as horse racing and football.

A major objective of the design of a casino is to keep patrons happy and make them forget that they are in a gambling establishment. Therefore, the décor should be dazzling and expensive-looking, and the lighting dimmed to create a sense of excitement and mystery. Music is played at a moderate volume to add ambience and mask the sound of people talking or betting. Often a big prize is displayed prominently, such as a sports car on a rotating pedestal.

The games that are played in a casino depend on local custom and laws. In general, however, a casino will offer roulette (which appeals to small bettors), craps, blackjack and slot machines. Asian casinos offer several traditional Far Eastern games, such as sic bo (which spread to many European and American casinos during the 1990s), fan-tan and pai gow.

The profitability of a casino depends on its house edge, which is the mathematical advantage that the house has over players in any given game. The house edge is not a fixed amount; it changes from game to game, and from machine to machine within a casino. Casinos use a variety of strategies to reduce the house edge and increase their own profits, including giving away free food and drinks, allowing gambling with chips instead of cash (which allows the casino to monitor the flow of money more closely) and reducing the number of tables and windows to minimize distractions.
