Basic Rules of Poker

2 min read

There are some basic rules to poker and these apply no matter what variant you play. The dealer shuffles the cards, the player on the chair to their right cuts and they deal out a hand of cards to each player starting with the person on their left. Each player then places their bets into the pot in a series of betting rounds. During the initial forced bets (the ante or blind) players can only raise their bets if they believe they have a strong enough hand to justify it. Other than these forced bets, money is only placed into the pot voluntarily by a player who believes that they are getting positive expected value for their action or for other strategic reasons.

A few important things to remember when playing poker is to not get too attached to your pocket hands. Even though pocket kings and queens are very good hands, the board can still spell doom for them especially if there are lots of flush cards or straight cards on it. It’s also a good idea to check the board before calling a bet and raising a bet.

The first round of betting is called the flop and after the betting is over the dealer will put 3 additional cards face up on the table that anyone can use. The second round of betting is called the turn and after that the dealer will put a fifth card on the table that everyone can use. After the final round of betting is complete the player with the highest ranked poker hand wins the pot.
